Travel Training

EI’s Open Awards accredited Independent Travel Training services support for young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) to travel independently to and from their place of education.
With the assistance of our fully trained Travel Trainers, we help young people using this service gain the confidence and skills that they need to make their journeys safely and independently.
How does it work?
The young person will be referred to our service by the Local Authority, and as their parent, guardian or carer you will be asked to attend a meeting at their school or place of further education. At this meeting you will both meet with one of our Travel Trainers and together you will draw up a personalised step-by-step travel plan for the journey which takes the young person’s needs into account.
As well as covering the journey and route information, the plan also covers areas such as personal safety and road safety as well as communication, money and time skills. The plan will be constantly assessed by the Travel Trainer with targets reviewed weekly, until the young person is ready to make the journey safely on their own.
Enabling Independence has had 20 years’ experience of working within the community and has a long-standing record of supporting independence and inclusion. All of our Travel Trainers have undergone a full and comprehensive training programme including an enhanced DBS check.
Our Independent Travel Training service is funded through the Local Authority.
